Most people buying a business laptop for a home office should get the Dell Pro 14 with a Core Ultra 7 and 16GB of memory. It comes with Windows 11 Pro, has built-in Ethernet, weighs 3 lbs, and five major US retailers sell this exact configuration. If you want memory you can upgrade later and a better camera, pick the ThinkPad T14 Gen 7. If your work runs on a Mac, the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 is the one to buy.

Dell Pro 14 (PC14250), Core Ultra 7, 16GB, 512GB
Most people who need a Windows work laptop should buy the Dell Pro 14.
View at NeweggThis configuration has an Intel Core Ultra 7 255U, 16GB of DDR5 memory, a 512GB SSD and Windows 11 Pro on a 14-inch 1920 x 1200 IPS screen. It weighs 3 lbs, has built-in Gigabit Ethernet for a wired connection at your desk, and the listing we used rates its battery at up to 10.3 hours. What we like
- Core Ultra 7, 16GB, 512GB, Windows 11 Pro
- Built-in Gigabit Ethernet
- 3 lbs and sold by five major US retailers
Watch out for

- Best for upgradability

Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 (14" AMD), Ryzen 5 PRO, 16GB, 512GB
Buy the ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 (AMD) if you want a laptop you can add memory to later and the best camera setup here.
View at LenovoIt pairs an AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 230 with 16GB of DDR5 in a SODIMM slot, a standard memory module rather than chips soldered to the board. It adds a 400-nit anti-glare 14-inch screen, a 5MP camera with IR face login and a privacy shutter, Wi-Fi 7, a backlit keyboard, a fingerprint reader and one year of onsite warranty service. Skip it if you want to buy from a store you already use: only Lenovo sells this configuration.
What we like
- Replaceable SODIMM memory
- 5MP IR camera with privacy shutter; Wi-Fi 7
- One-year onsite warranty
Watch out for
- Sold only by Lenovo in this configuration
- Lenovo’s page doesn’t publish battery life or weight
- Best big-screen pick

Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 3 (16" Intel), Core 7, 16GB, 512GB
The ThinkPad E16 Gen 3 is for spreadsheet work: a 16-inch 1920 x 1200 screen with a full number pad.
View at WalmartThis configuration has an Intel Core 7 240H (a Core chip, not one of Intel’s Core Ultra line like the Dell’s), 16GB of replaceable SODIMM memory and a 512GB SSD, and Lenovo lists USB-A, USB-C, Thunderbolt 4 and HDMI ports. Buy it if the laptop stays on a desk and you want a big screen and no adapters. Skip it if you work near a bright window, since its 300-nit screen is the dimmest here, or if you carry the laptop around a lot.
What we like
- 16" screen with a full number pad
- Replaceable SODIMM memory
- Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, USB-A and USB-C
Watch out for
- 300-nit screen, dimmer than the T14’s
- Larger and heavier to carry than a 14" laptop
- Best Mac for business

Apple MacBook Air 13" (M5), 16GB, 512GB
If your work runs on a Mac, buy the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5.

It has two Thunderbolt 4 ports plus MagSafe charging, drives up to two external displays, and weighs 2.7 lbs. Skip it if your employer needs Windows, or if you want built-in HDMI or Ethernet. What makes a laptop a business laptop?
Business lines such as Dell Pro and Lenovo ThinkPad come with Windows 11 Pro, which adds the device management and BitLocker encryption that IT departments use. They also offer IR cameras for Windows Hello face login, privacy shutters, fingerprint readers and onsite warranty service. Consumer laptops can be just as fast, but the consumer models we looked at were mostly sold with 8GB of memory, which is why none made this list.
How much memory do you need?
Buy 16GB. A video call, a shared document and a busy browser can use more than 8GB together. Both ThinkPads use SODIMM memory, a standard module you can swap for a bigger one later. The MacBook’s memory can’t be changed after purchase, and the Dell listing we used doesn’t say either way. Our guide to how much RAM you need explains when 24GB or 32GB is worth it.
Windows or Mac?
Use whatever your employer’s software supports. If you have a choice, the MacBook Air is hard to beat for battery life and weight, while the ThinkPads and the Dell offer replaceable memory, wired Ethernet or a number pad. Deciding between Apple’s own laptops? Our MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro comparison goes through the differences.
T series or E series?
Lenovo sells its E series as a step below the T series. The E16 Gen 3 still gives you the biggest screen here, a number pad, Thunderbolt 4 and replaceable memory. What you give up against the T14 is the brighter anti-glare screen, the 5MP IR camera and Wi-Fi 7.
One cable to your desk
All four picks can connect to a monitor or dock over USB-C or Thunderbolt. A USB-C monitor that charges the laptop, or one of the docks in our USB-C and Thunderbolt docking stations guide, turns any of them into a one-cable desk.
Check the warranty
Both ThinkPad configurations come with one year of onsite warranty service from Lenovo, so a technician comes to you instead of you shipping the laptop away. For the Dell and the MacBook, check the warranty terms on the retailer’s page, and consider an extended plan if a week without your laptop would stop your work.
How we chose
We have not tested these laptops. Every figure here comes from the maker’s or a retailer’s published spec sheet, linked under Sources. We started from laptops sold new by at least one major US retailer and kept only configurations with at least 16GB of memory and an SSD. We left out HP EliteBook listings because every listing we saw was used or refurbished, and we skipped consumer models sold with 8GB of memory. For each laptop we link only the exact configuration described here.
Questions people ask
What is the best business laptop for working from home?
For most people, the Dell Pro 14 with a Core Ultra 7, 16GB of memory and Windows 11 Pro. If your work runs on a Mac, buy the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5.
Do I need Windows 11 Pro for working from home?
Not necessarily. Windows 11 Pro adds features that company IT departments use, such as device management and BitLocker encryption. If your employer manages your laptop, they may require it; for your own business, Windows 11 Home is often enough.
Is a business laptop better than a consumer laptop?
Not faster, but business models tend to come with more memory, IR cameras, fingerprint readers and onsite warranty options. For a laptop you rely on every working day, those extras are usually worth having.
Can I upgrade the memory in these laptops later?
In the two ThinkPads, yes: their memory is a standard SODIMM module. The MacBook Air’s memory can’t be upgraded after purchase. For the Dell Pro 14, the listing we used doesn’t say, so check Dell’s manual for your exact model.
